Yet another reason not to rely on 911

November 14, 2008

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. will recommend that a sheriff’s dispatcher be fired for hanging up on a woman who had called 911 while she was being beaten by her boyfriend, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office Thursday.

Clarke said in the release that dispatchers are trained to deal with chaotic calls.

“The experienced dispatcher should have known that you don’t hang up on people because they are unable to articulate the kind of help they need,” Clarke said in the release. - jsonline.com

Partial audio here. The call ends with the dispatcher telling the frightened woman “Call back when you’re going to talk to me.”

I don’t want to impugn the many good people working in the dispatch centers, but these kinds of things happen. And even when the police are dispatched, they are at best minutes away in a situation where seconds count. So, take responsibility for your own safety.

Wow…

I finaly got the money together for the upper for the AR-15 lower I built. After hearing good things about them, I ordered from del-ton. They said that orders are backlogged 8-12 weeks.

Remind me to schedule any future purchases further from the election of anti-gun presidents…

I’ll try to get photos up in 8-12 weeks.

Quote of the Day - EBR Edition

November 13, 2008

Personally, I just picked up some Hodgdons FFg-equivalent Pyrodex, pre-lubed pillow ticking patches, #11 percussion caps, and .490 caliber round balls. The thing is, my .50-cal muzzle loader has an evil black synthetic stock, it is based on a military rifle (well, from about 150 years ago), and is (in theory) capable of killing large game at 100 yards. So it meets a lot of the criteria and has a lot of the cosmetic features that anti-gun bigots are trying to ban. - Greg

I think that the best thing you can do for your family is to rely on yourselves, and let the police take care of the paperwork, because that’s all they can do if someone breaks into your home and threatens your life. - Bonnie

More like this, please

I have been a little remiss in downstream elections, so to make up for it….

You have to like a guy like this:

We need to make sure that the we are voting in the downstream elections, and getting guys like Paul Ryan elected/reelected. Even if you can’t bring yourself to vote for McCain, at least vote in the downstream elections.

Quote of the Day - Hang Together Edition

November 1, 2008

We have the data, and the arguments, to show that hunting is in every bit as much danger, and perhaps more, as gun rights are.  Hunters may soon come to find they need us more than we need them.  When it comes to that, we need to stand by them.  The proper remedy is to convince hunters their interests lie with ours, and divisive language isn’t going to help achieve that. - Sebastian

Exactly. Hunters, shooters, gun collectors, and anyone else that owns a gun for any lawful reason are all in the same boat. We need to unify behind our right to own arms, for any reason we choose.

The free market runs best when everyone has the best information. We gunbloggers are simply in the business of making that information available to whomever chooses to visit our sites. - Greg Morris

Quote of the Day - An Ounce of Prevention Edition

October 22, 2008

There has never been a genocide without a prior implementation of gun control.  It’s trival to come up with 60 million dead due to gun control in the 20th century.  Other estimates range as high as 200 million.  And it is the prevention of those sort of genocides that is my primary motivation. - Joe Huffman
