I answered this in the comments, but it is important enough for a post
Nice to know your efforts are actually worth something. I live in California, and from I’ve heard, the CA GOP has pretty much given up on the state. I’m a volunteer, too, but the local headquarters is so disorganized. They still haven’t put their phone banks in and we haven’t started calling anyone.
I can understand why they’re not putting in any resources in CA since there are swing states that really count, but I thought the state GOP would at least put up a semblance of a fight. Instead, we’re not even showing up at the match and just conceding it to the opponent. This is probably the real reason CA is so liberal.
I’m still volunteering and manning the headquarters, but I’m starting to wonder if my time is better spent somewhere else.
I find this troubling. I can understand why the McCain campaign would not want to sink any money in a state that they have virtually no chance of winning, but the state GOP not even having the phone banks running is bad. It is not good to just write off a state, because, among other things, the larger the margin of loss, the harder it will be to turn it around in the future, and the less likely it is to win local races. While this is not, and should not be, a concern of the the McCain campaign, it should be the concern of the state party.
One alternative, if you are in a similar situation, or just think it would be easier, is to just go to the phone bank portion of johnmccain.com, where you can use your phone, and their script and calling list to make calls in your state.
