Not quite what I expected from a Democrat Sheriff

The following PSA is running on Milwaukee radio:

I’m Sheriff David Clarke, and I want to talk to you about something personal: your safety. It’s no longer a spectator sport; I need you in the game. But are you ready?

With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.

You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back, but are you prepared?

Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there.

You have a duty to protect yourself and your family.

We’re partners now, can I count on you?

This safely message brought to you by The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office.

Actually, it is something I would expect from Sheriff Clarke, but it’s pretty awesome to hear this sort of unabashed support for self defense from law enforcement.

  3. I don’t know the man (I work in Florida), but it is what I have been saying and pushing for years: law enforcement agencies training citizens to be able to defend themselves. Cops are never there when bad things happen (not their fault, just reality), so a person needs to be able to survive long enough for help to arrive. Could be 5 minutes or much longer.

  4. […] In the same story, Robyn Thomas, director of the the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in San Francisco said: “I think at its core, his position is an emotional one, based on the idea that people feel safer when they have guns. But studies have shown more guns don’t deter crime,” Thomas said. “There’s no research that shows guns make anyone safer, and it does show that, the more guns in any situation, the higher the likelihood of them harming either the owner, or people who have access to them.” No research at all. Except this. And this, from Congress. Oh, and this. Seriously, if you want to try to refute the data, knock yourself out, but you look out of touch with your issue when you claim there isn’t research that clearly exists. It is good to see other law enforcement leaders follow Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke. […]
