Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. will recommend that a sheriff’s dispatcher be fired for hanging up on a woman who had called 911 while she was being beaten by her boyfriend, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office Thursday.
Clarke said in the release that dispatchers are trained to deal with chaotic calls.
“The experienced dispatcher should have known that you don’t hang up on people because they are unable to articulate the kind of help they need,” Clarke said in the release. - jsonline.com
Partial audio here. The call ends with the dispatcher telling the frightened woman “Call back when you’re going to talk to me.”
I don’t want to impugn the many good people working in the dispatch centers, but these kinds of things happen. And even when the police are dispatched, they are at best minutes away in a situation where seconds count. So, take responsibility for your own safety.

Because this kid makes a strong play for being my new hero:
Madison (WKOW) – 13 year old Jack Theisen had to make a quick decision when two would-be robbers were in the process of coming through an unlocked, basement door, and Theisen was home alone.
Theisen grabbed his Red Ryder model BB gun and shot the first invader in the shoulder, scaring off both men.

More details here.
Also Quoted at Shotgun World:
The gun is an MX-12 Perazzi, serial # 84961. It has Olympic stickers, and world cup stickers on the bottom of the stock, and the stock also has a G-Squared. The stock is also very distinguishable by it’s extreme offset, and a black grip cap, which is there because the stock bolt can only be accessed from underneath the grip cap (the offset is so great that the stockbolt would otherwise be on the outside of the stock). The stock was made by Wenig Gunstocks. On the barrel there are two small stickers on each side of the barrel that read Perazzi and Winchester, both are in red. The barrels are 26 1/2″ barrels with screw in chokes, and have a Schnabel forend. The gun case is also very distinct, it is an Americase with my name embroidered in gold inside. It also has my name, address, and phone number on the outside
From the details, it certainly sounds like the thieves knew exactly what they were after. I hope that she gets her gun back, if anyone knows anything, contact the Riverside Sheriff’s department. Lake Elsinore station, which can be reached at (951)245-3300.

To the family of Bill Gwatney, the chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, who was shot and killed yesterday. The murderer was killed by police after a 30 mile high speed chase. (story)
My thoughts and prayers are with both families.

From CNN
Cool. I like to see people that refuse to be victims, whether they use a gun, a knife, or a broom.

“A gun lives forever, a human being doesn’t live forever, It does much damage to anyone in the community.” - Mayor Richard Daley
I suppose the Mayor is trying to say that the gun is a more lasting threat or something, BUT A GUN DOES NOT LIVE FOREVER. IT IS NOT ALIVE IN THE FIRST PLACE. It has been said often, but until we stop hearing stupid stuff like this, it will be said again. A gun does not have a will, except for the will of the person holding it.

“He should lose his job. One teenager a week is being murdered on the streets of Britain and here he is brandishing a knife, Enough is enough – we need to get tough on knives in this country and our judges should be handing out tough sentences, not brandishing their own.” - Lyn Costello, co-founder of the Mothers Against Murder and Aggression
She is referring to a judge who had a sub-three inch knife, demonstrating what was acceptable to a thug who attacked someone where England used to be. Just to say it again: It is the person that is the problem, not the instrument.

HAMILTON — A local man is concerned for his son, a soldier he said is in jail in Canada for possessing a firearm.
Army Cpl. Kevin Shope, a 25-year-old Hamilton High School graduate, was cutting through Canada on his way from Michigan to report to Fort Drum in New York, according to his father, David Shope of Hamilton. - Middletown Journal
Apart from the obvious, saying that it is appalling that a soldier (or anyone) is facing 3 years in jail for carrying a pistol in his bags, remember that Canada is not as gun friendly a place as the US. Until they get a clue, we need to be very careful what you do bringing any weapons over the border. Hopefully this can get worked out.
